Annual Pow Wow

The pow wow, or "wacipi" in the Dakota language, is an exciting and fun time. It is a time to gather together and to share as families and as a community. Most of the annual pow wows for this region of South Dakota occur in the month of August.

The annual pow wow for the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe is located in Fort Thompson and is held the third weekend of August (August 13 - 16, 2009).  Events include a parade, community meals, softball tournaments, demolition derby, rodeo, and the primary focus, the traditional dancing.  Dancers are men, women, and youth from not only our Crow Creek Sioux Tribe, but also many attend from across the region.

Since those of us here with Diamond Willow Ministries, our family and friends, are participants in many of these activities, we don't host work groups during the pow wow. However, visitors are welcome at the pow wows on the reservation, and you are welcome to come attend.

Some of the other pow wows in our area are the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe's on the second weekend of August, and the Big Bend Community pow wow (located on the western district of the Crow Creek Sioux Reservation) the last weekend of July.
